I am a lifelong resident of Tenafly, New Jersey. I earned a B.A. from Smith College in Music and English Literature and was awarded a 4-year merit scholarship for piano and vocal studies.
I spent my junior year abroad at the Royal College of Music in London, England and wrote my honors music thesis on a comparison and evaluation of different approaches to piano teaching. While at Smith I gave private piano lessons to students referred to me by the Music Department,. After graduating I taught piano and music appreciation at the prestigious Rockleigh Country Day School and took courses in education at Fairleigh Dickenson University. I continue to explore the latest developments in piano pedagogy, teaching materials and repertoire. I have created original educational materials and games to reinforce piano reading skills and to motivate practicing. I originated the innovative concept of the Piano Workshop (see under Services) as a more meaningful and affordable alternative to the formal recital. I have created a comprehensive piano program that fosters both good playing technic as well as fluent reading skills and introduces students to a wide variety of musical styles.
I grew up in a household filled with every type of music imaginable. My father was a professional clarinetist and saxophone player who taught me to read music before I knew the alphabet. He had a passion for opera and sang tenor arias instead of lullabies to me as an infant. It was a very proud moment for my father when I sang the lead role of Santuzza in Cavaleria Rusticana with the Fort Lee Opera Company. I miss my dad and sometimes the only cure is to take out the clarinet he taught me on and play. My mother studied piano at the Lichtenberg School of Music in Englewood, NJ. She was a shy, reserved woman, but was transformed at the keyboard when performing dramatic, passionate pieces like Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Minor. My brother studied organ with one of the world's foremost woman organists, Dr. Claire Cocci. A large Allen organ and a Steinway baby grand piano left little space in the living room for any furniture. When all this music making became too lively, our poodle would start to howl. How dull home life would have been without the musical strains of Gershwin, Verdi, Mozart, Rogers and Hammerstein, Louis Armstrong, Enrico Caruso and the poodle serenades!
